WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

VISIO DIVINA

An ancient form of prayer

Visio Divina means “divine seeing.” It is a way of praying with one’s eyes.

Contemplation

Natural landscapes work well for practicing Visio, but so does fine or sacred art.

engage your creativity

One particularly fun way to practice Visio Divina is through devotional coloring.

THE why

"USE WHAT YOU HAVE"

God whispered these words to my soul at a time I was convinced I had nothing. Over time, he's helped me claim a multitude of things that are firmly and blessedly in my possession—not least, art and words.

ART, Spiritual disciplines, and Coloring

A place to exhale

Years ago, while I served as a Worship and Creative Arts Pastor, God spoke to me about set design, the artistic elements of atmosphere, and projection screens. He effectively convinced me that screens and digital art are the “stained glass” of the modern church. It pained me to think that the art slapped into sermon graphics was as good as we might get.

Over the last five years, I’ve used art to help hospice patients and their families navigate grief, processed my own pain and wonder, and created pieces for young and old to use in prayer. It was an accident to land on a “stained glass” inspired style—but when it happened, it felt right—and reminded me of that old conversation. There is much that art can teach us in conjunction with the Holy Spirit, especially when it gives us room to quiet our clamoring minds and pay attention.

May your eyes see something your heart has yearned to understand.

Words from the Wild

I've found these coloring pages to be a great and helpful way to practice listening for the Father's voice. Each piece recounts an important part of the story of Scripture, and serves as an opportunity to ask the Holy Spirit for clarity and guidance.

Bethany's beautiful illustrations and coloring sheets from Scripture were a great addition to our Women's Retreat. Many of the women enjoyed the visual and interactive way that coloring the Scripture helped them connect the meaning of the Word to their hearts.

Although this art connects with Bible stories, Bethany's vision and experience of God translates. Picking up one of these coloring pages invites you into an encounter with God.

At our Women's Retreat, walking through the Visio Divina for the Parable of the Sower with Bethany was very powerful and captured our holy imaginations, allowing us to hear a word from the Lord in a vivid and new way.
